How does a violet wand circuitry work?

I’m a guy who loves to play with electric toys, and shock my friends, etc. Normally though all the shock devices however (weather its shock lighters, stun guns, electro massagers, etc), they all need 2 points of contact to complete the circuit and deliver the shock.

However I’ve recently heard of these violet wands that do not need 2 points of contact, in fact they can just send a spark through the air, how is that possible? I thought electricity needs a positive point of current and a negative or ground.

Does that mean the wand is just spitting out positive current that goes through the other person to find ground?

And is it possible to easily construct something similar that is portable and battery powered?

Battery powered and portable? I don’t think so, if you want smth very impressive! In these devices for every centimeter of spark you need aboyt 10000 volts.
The phenomenon has to do with the humidity air contains.
You could try searching in the web for nicola tesla who studied this kind of stuff.
